A weekend in Squamish appealed as it was surrounded by mountainous provincial parks on the coast and only a couple of hours drive from Chillliwack. The drive was uneventful apart from the breathtaking views of the Howe Sound coast from the Sea & Sky Highways elevation on its way to Whistler once we passed Vancouver. We limited ourselves to a brief excursion around town after arriving on Friday. As we were walking along a narrow pathway towards the estuary intending to check out the birdlife we came across fresh evidence of bear activity& decided that discretion seemed in order. Saturday was overcast to start & the mountains around us were shrouded in mist for most of the morning so we confined ourselves to visiting the Shannon Falls. This was followed by a scenic drive & short walk into Garibaldi provincial park before repairing to the Howe Sound Brewery & Inn for excellent value food washed down with most authentic english style bitter.
Sunday was clear & sunny after checking ou twe decided to attempt.the Stawamus Chief or at least the 1st of the 3 granite peaks. These range from 610 to 715 metres high - our aim being the smallest - and soon discovered that to quote the notice at the foot "this was no walk in the park"asit involved lots of uneven steps some scambling and a couple of ladder & chain assisted sections. Expecting an hour & a half round trip we set off but the as Jenny was not 100% I went on alone. It turned out to be an hour & a half to the top for a fantastic view of the sound & mountains & a similarly hard hour long trek down. Once more we took refuge in the Howe Sound Inn for lunch and for me a reviving pint.of another excellent beer. My legs took 2 days to recover !
