Our visit to the Grand Canyon was based at the Cameron Trading Post (another 100 year old establishment) about 25 miles away from the canyon itself and now a Navajo cooperative - still dry though.
We arrived in time to have our first view of the canyon at Desert View which was more impressive than either of us had expected - average 10 miles wide & 1 deep -despite having seen it on screen many times before. The following day I drove back to Desert View & the extra 25 miles along the rim to the Grand Canyon Village/Visitor Center via various view points . I then walked 3+ miles of the rim following the "Trail of Time" which used stone at intervals to demonstrate the various strata of the canyon from the oldest 1.88 billion years to the most recent - only 600 million & provided amazing vistas. The walk was informative & although there were lots of other people around it did not seem to disturb the elk lying in the shade just outside the geological museum at the end.
