KL is not my favourite city but the timing of our flight meant we had to stay one night which turned into two when we couldn't book a train to link with the Langkawi ferry for the following day. We spent our time touring the few places of interest that we were attracted to travelling by local air con trains very cheaply - 3 stops for 20p !. The butterfly park was good value for 4 pound each. It resembled in feel a japanese garden in that, although in a very confined space, it seemed quite big because of the twists & turns of the pathways. It also had lots of running water and ponds at every turn teeming with koi carp and a vast collection of other insects & amphibeans. After this we went to the "bird park" - aviary to you and I - which they sat is the largest free flight space for birds in the world. There are however some cages for larger predator birds - for captive breeding purposes - but otherwise it is a huge space with some beautiful birds including the most strikingly coloured scarlet ibis. Dining out in local cafe was very reasonable and generally a filling meal for two plus a couple of beers each come to about 15 quid ! Our next stop is Langkawi via the sleeper train to Alor Star - an improvement on India & only 9quid each for a 10hour journey - and then the ferry to Kuah.
