Arrived here after an easy drive down from Auckland. After booking in and a tea/cricket break we set off for a short drive to see Lake & Mount Tarawera. The mountain used to have extensive pink and white limestone/silica terraces until it blew in 1885 reducing the height of the mountain to half its former height. Despite the loss of the terraces it is still a very arresting sight and the lake is beautiful. The following morning after breakfast/checkout we visited the Whakawharewa "thermal village where some displaced maori were relocated as a result of the Mt Tarawera eruption. The village is built within an active but stable thermal area & uses this for winter heating, water for bathing and steam cooking . We saw a small "cultural show" which amounted to short local craft demo plus some singing/dancing and D-I-Y Haka. Charming really
